A pool table stands in the open-plan living room. “The work was interesting and the quality of life fabulous,” he says, from the home he designed and built himself in Bedfordshire. On some days he was needed for only a few hours. Irwin’s job was to do the “turnarounds”: checking the plane over after it arrived and ensuring it was safe to take off again.
